NCMJ is published bimonthly by the North Carolina Institute of Medicine and The Duke Endowment with the support and cooperation of the North Carolina Medical Society and other key stakeholders in health and health care in the state. While the Journal solicits and prints peer-reviewed scientific articles, we seek to facilitate communication between and among stakeholders, practitioners, patients, and the public over the most important contemporary health issues. We draw on our Editorial Board for input on the key topics affecting health in North Carolina and beyond our borders, but we also seek contributions and suggestions from all who are touched by the Journal.

Each installment of the Journal features a policy forum devoted to interchange and debate about a single, highly salient health issue. A major issue brief leads off each of these forums, followed by separate, shorter commentaries from persons with special perspectives or expertise.

We are anxious to engage our readers in further dialogue in response to the publication of these forums. We encourage you to send letters to the editor, either addressing issues not covered by forum authors or challenging their views and conclusions.

We hope that each issue of the Journal will become a standard reference for policy makers and policy shapers engaged in the difficult task of addressing the health challenges and problems facing our state. Send us your comments and your criticism as we work day to day to make the North Carolina Medical Journal a useful and important contribution to health policy for the benefit of all North Carolinians.
